ask vtwonenA dark room in the house is a challenge in terms of interior. How do you get it as light as possible, decorated, according to your wishes and important: how do you choose the right colors? Editor-in-chief Nicolette Fox of vtwonen loves color in every interior and therefore also in the dark spaces.
Of course, you can also embrace it, Nicolette suggests. “Some people like to live in a dark house and make their own cocoon. Personally, I prefer lighter houses, so I try to capture the light that is there. This is possible with white on the walls and ceiling, but also with different shades.”
It is precisely the ‘colour’ of white that is a pitfall in many households. “When it’s dark, an all-white wall can enhance the contrast. With a shade you can create warmth.”

Can it even be nice fur?
,,Well, you’re talking to someone of ‘team color’. But I notice that I am in a hectic time and I am looking for some more peace. I think more people experience that the inspiration now comes from nature, less from the fairs and exhibitions, in my case. So I like colors like beige, green, wood color and white at the moment. That can get boring. So I can’t resist adding some highlights, like a fluorescent candle.
Cobalt blue is a good investment anyway, because that is really a color that is coming for the interior
Those kinds of items provide depth, tension… it’s the odd one out. This makes the rest of the palette stand out nicely. I also have two lilac pillows on the sofa. Lilac provides depth between the beige, green, brown and white.”
The bedroom is of course darker more often. Does it matter which room it is?
,,My bedroom also has a nicely balanced, fresh and natural color palette. I then added two cobalt blue lights. Cobalt blue is a good investment anyway, because that is really a color that is coming for the interior. There is a lilac plaid on my bed to deviate from the rest.”
Do you actually have to take artificial light into account? Do lights make colors look a little different?
“In any case, before you start working on the interior, it is important to take a good look at where the light comes from. In sun-through rooms, the morning light enters one side and the evening sun enters the other. You can take this into account when applying color. In the center of the room is perhaps the most constant shade. I would put an eye-catcher there. Something that demands attention and preferably in a lighter color.”
White is not completely woven away by Nicolette. “It’s a safe choice, but there are so many shades of white. I wouldn’t go for RAL 9016. We also call this traffic white. But there are also whites with a warmer undertone. Then you keep it light and yet atmospheric.”
