María de los Ángeles Jaramillo, a Colombian fencer, won the first national gold in the medal table of the XIX Bolivarian Games Valledupar 2022.
In the Country Club of the capital of Cesar, the national athlete was awarded the first gold of Colombia in the continental contest.

This was the way to the first gold of Colombia
Jaramillo registered four victories in the elimination round, achieved against Bárbara García, from Chile; Maria Benedito, from Panama; Luz Bustos, from Bolivia, and Violeta Ramírez, from the Dominican Republic, in that order.
Subsequently, the Colombian surpassed the Ecuadorian Priscila Sulen, the Panamanian Alessandra Aicardi and the Venezuelan Gabriela Viveros, in the eighth, quarter and semifinals, respectively.
Finally, María defeated the Peruvian María Luisa Doig 15-13 in the final of the Bolivarian women’s sword. This, to become the first Colombian champion of the XIX Bolivarian Games.

“I am very happy, I have already given the first gold medal to Colombia and I know that many more will come (…) It was a very close final, I managed to come back, it was very strong”, commented the Bolivarian champion.

In the early hours, Santiago Pachón took the bronze in the men’s individual foil.
In this way, the first day of fencing competitions in Valledupar 2022 was closed. Colombia closed the day with a gold and a bronze to its credit.
