From 2027, Bullfighting shows will no longer be able to take place in Colombia. This was decided by parliament with a very large majority vote: 93 votes in favor and only 2 against.
“We have made a historic step forward, the killing of bulls will be banned in the country,” the deputies wrote.

The new law, which will come into force in three years, provides a transition period during which the State will have to guarantee alternative jobs to those who depend directly or indirectly on bullfighting. Furthermore, the arenas will have to be adapted to host sporting and cultural activities.
Already in 2018the Court The Constitution had authorized bullfights only in cities and villages with a strong bullfighting tradition, delegating the task of applying any restrictions to parliamentarians. As a result, bullfights were already banned from 2020 to Bogota and Medellin, but continued to be practiced in Cali and Manizales, where they are an integral part of traditional festivals.
With this decision, the Colombia joins other South American countries as Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay and Guatemalawho have already banned bullfighting.
