Colin ‘Smiley’ Petersenthe original drummer of the Bee Gees, has passed away this Monday at the age of 78, leaving behind an indelible legacy in music and a career that marked both film and stage.
A death announced on the Facebook page of the Bee Gees tribute show, Best of the Bee Gees: “He enriched our lives and united our group with love, care and respect. I don’t know how we could move forward without her radiant smile and deep friendship. We love you, colonel. Rest in peace.”
The artist, whose causes of death have not been revealed, He joined the emblematic band in 1966becoming the first member beyond the Gibb brothers, Barry, Robin and Maurice. He participated in the greatest hits and was in the group until 1967, the year in which he was fired.
It is part of such iconic Bee Gees songs as I Started a Joke, To Love Somebody either I Just Gotta Get a Message to Youthanks to which, among others, the band managed to sell more than 22 million copies.
Before pursuing a career in music, Petersen had already gained notoriety as a child actor in the Australian film Smiley (1956), a role that earned him the nickname by which he was known throughout his life.
The artist He had two sons, Jaime and Ben, and was married to Joanne Newfield.with whom he founded a representation company after his departure from the band Humpy Bong along with Jonathan Kelly and Tim Staffell.
