(Reuters) – The Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB) reported the provisional suspension of weightlifter Fernando Reis on Friday for “adverse analytical result” in a doping test conducted on June 11, outside the competition period, which takes him away. of the Tokyo Olympic Games starting next week.
The COB said in a statement that Brazil’s anti-doping agency identified that the sample from Reis, 31, contained the presence of growth hormone.
“Thus, the athlete is excluded from the delegation that will compete in the Tokyo Olympic Games”, stated the COB.
“Brazil’s Olympic Committee reinforces its commitment to clean sport, maintaining several educational initiatives to combat doping,” adds the note. “All the athletes of the Brazilian delegation in Tokyo necessarily took the course on fighting doping offered by the World Anti-Doping Agency.”
Reis, a bronze medalist at the 2018 World Weightlifting Championship in Ashgabat in the 109 kg category after the disqualification of Uzbek Rustam Djangabaev, would compete in his third Olympics.
The Brazilian finished in 11th place in London-2012 and fifth in Rio-2016, in the 105 kg category.
