Many Union politicians are open to a coalition with the Greens – despite rejection from the CSU leader. Party vice-president Weber is now putting Markus Söder’s statements into perspective.
Munich – CSU leader Markus Söder has been making it clear for months that he rejects a coalition between the Union and the Greens after the federal election. Some Union colleagues see it differently. For example, his CSU vice-chairman, Manfred Weber, who does not want to reject black-green cooperation in the federal government across the board.
Black-green after the 2025 federal election: CSU vice-president Weber opposes party leader Söder
“Democrats should always be able to talk to each other and try to find ways to work together,” Weber emphasized to the Editorial network Germany (RND). A coalition depends on whether the Greens take a realistic stance on migration. “There are Greens who find it difficult to recognize the realities of migration. And there are Greens like Winfried Kretschmann in Baden-Württemberg who want a realistic migration course,” said Söder’s CSU deputy.
The Union must now find the “right balance” in migration policy. It is important to combat illegal migration consistently. The CDU and CSU also stand by asylum law and the Geneva Refugee Convention – this must be clearly communicated.
“Unity”: Many Union members are open to a coalition with the Greens – Söder threatens to veto
Weber also believes that the Union can show unity until the federal election. “It is not a time for tactics, but for action. What makes me hopeful is that we have never appeared as united as we are now,” he told the RND. At the same time, Söder had already threatened a veto if the Union wanted to form a coalition with the Greens after the federal election. His ongoing criticism of the Greens is met with resistance from the Union majority. After all, black and green rule in North Rhine-Westphalia, Baden-Württemberg and Schleswig-Holstein.
Loud RND Twelve of 15 state associations do not want to rule out working with the Greens after the federal election. “After the election, we will look closely with which coalition partner a real policy change is possible,” emphasized the CDU General Secretary in North Rhine-Westphalia, Paul Ziemiak. The CDU is “ready to hold talks with all democratic parties.” Blanket coalition cancellations are “absurd,” said CDU General Secretary from Schleswig-Holstein, Lukas Kilian.
Black-green in the federal government: The Union’s candidate for chancellor does not rule out a coalition
The Union’s candidate for chancellor and CDU leader Friedrich Merz does not hold back in criticizing the Greens – although he does not want an alliance with the party, he is not yet ruling it out. He wanted to wait for the Greens to reorient themselves after the party leaders resigned.
The CSU party conference starts on Friday (October 11th), at which, among others, CSU boss Söder and the Union’s new candidate for chancellor Merz will speak to the delegates. A big topic will be immigration policy, the CSU is making clear demands. (hk)
