CNN announced this Tuesday (30) that it had suspended anchor Chris Cuomo for an “indefinite period” because the journalist would have helped in the defense of his brother, former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, including using his work at press for that.
Andrew Cuomo of the Democratic Party resigned in August as an impeachment lawsuit against him was pending in the New York State House after an investigation found he had sexually harassed several women and staged an attempt to retaliate against one of his accusers.
According to a CNN spokesman, the New York Attorney General has released records that show Chris Cuomo acted more forcefully in his brother’s defense than was first thought.
Earlier, he had admitted that he had advised the former governor’s lawyers, which was considered by the company due to the anchor’s family situation. At the time, in May, CNN ordered him to stop providing this help. However, the company claims that the new information points to a higher level of involvement from Chris Cuomo.
According to CNN, documents released this week by New York Attorney General Letitia James include text messages and transcripts of interviews with investigators who investigated the allegations against the then governor. Among the records are messages between Chris Cuomo and Melissa DeRosa, an adviser to Andrew Cuomo, that suggest the journalist was instrumental in the defense-building work.
Also according to CNN, the text messages also revealed that Chris Cuomo had tried to use his media connections to prepare the then-governor’s team, as the allegations against Andrew Cuomo began to be published. In addition, Chris Cuomo also tried to get more information about a report that journalist Ronan Farrow was doing on the matter.
