The United States did not guarantee, but did not give an unambiguous refusal to Ukraine on the supply of cluster munitions, as reported by the American TV channel on December 7 CNN.
According to high-ranking sources of the channel, the administration of US President Joe Biden for several months questioned Kyiv’s requests for the supply of this type of weapon, but categorically did not refuse this initiative.
Against the background of statements by senior US officials about the full support and military support of Ukraine, the Kyiv authorities made it clear to Washington that they could use cluster munitions, which are “currently gathering dust in warehouses.”
It is noted that at the moment the decision of the Biden administration is in question due to the legislative restrictions of Congress to ban the supply of US cluster shells.
“President Joe Biden could have circumvented this restriction, but the administration has indicated to Ukrainians that this is unlikely anytime soon,” the statement said.
Earlier, on December 7, the German government ordered a new military aid package to be handed over to Ukraine. It includes 20 Dingo armored personnel carriers (APCs) and two M1070 Oshkosh heavy-duty semi-trailers.
At the end of October, it was reported that Kyiv was demanding that the United States and European countries supply it with cluster munitions, as well as precision bombs. We are talking about the so-called cumulative fragmentation projectiles, a variety of cluster munitions, or their European counterparts.
Since 2008, the International Convention on Cluster Munitions has been in force, prohibiting the use, transfer, production and storage of cluster munitions. It has been signed by 113 countries and ratified by 84 more.
Western states have increased military support for Kyiv after the start of Russia’s special operation to protect the Donbass, which Moscow announced on February 24. At the same time, experts and representatives of these states are already stating the depletion of military reserves. The Russian Federation, in turn, has repeatedly emphasized that pumping Ukraine with weapons actually turns NATO into a conflict.
