Mexico City.- The Mexican Chamber of the Construction Industry (CMIC) reported that it is carrying out a diagnosis to know the effects left by the passage of Hurricane “John” in Acapulco, at the end of September of this year.
Luis Méndez Jaled, president of the organization, explained that after the diagnosis it would be seen if the damage left by this natural phenomenon would generate a setback in the reconstruction work that was being carried out in Acapulco after the passage of “Otis” in October 2023.
“Acapulco came from a recovery from Hurricane “Otis”, where it showed a reconstruction progress in infrastructure of around 50 percent. We have to wait, perhaps there will be a setback (with the passage of “John”) in drainage issues , sewage, drinking water, electricity, among others,” he said. When questioned about how long it would take Acapulco to rebuild after the hurricanes, he highlighted that it is difficult to know since it depends on factors such as resources, organization, coordination between all the actors involved in the process.
“In the following months or years, progress will continue in that (reconstruction). We do not believe it will be recovered soon,” he told the media after inaugurating Expo Cihac 2024.
In October 2023, CMIC had estimated that the reconstruction of Acapulco with the passage of “Otis” would take approximately five years, and that one of the challenges for this was the shortage of workers in the construction sector. “The important thing is that there is a lot of solidarity and the government is working hard and immediately promoting recovery,” he commented. He pointed out that some of the issues in which not much progress has been made with the reconstruction of “Otis” are related to condominium issues and the payment of property insurance.
