Club World Cup chaos. Tebas: “It must be stopped, I will sue FIFA”
Javer Tebas, interviewed by the Guardian, shoots nothing on the Super League, Fifa and the Club World Cup. The president of the Spanish La Liga has announced his intention to take legal action against the highest football body. “The 32-team format must be stopped and it is my priority to do so. The players have their well-being at heart and this type of competition only brings money to a series of clubs and compresses the calendar,” he said in reference to the World Cup for clubs.
The president of the Spanish La Liga Tebas: “Stopping the 32-team format of the Club World Cup is my priority. Super League? It has no chance”
The Super League, on the other hand, from his point of view “has very little chance of being accepted by the clubs: that is, none”, said Tebas. And on the president of Real Madrid Florentino Perez he explained: “his objective is that the big clubs, the richest ones and with the greatest resources, can manage football in Europe. And that the others are only vassals, who should be happy with any what they are given. The fundamental differences I have with Florentino are two completely opposite models of professional football, nationally as well as in Europe. There is no compromise between them, they are black and white and there is no gray area “.
Speaking about the Club World Cup, Tebas says he is ready for legal action, which he defines as his “priority”, against FIFA. “Look at the ruling of the European Court of Justice. It referred to the Super League but it is entirely applicable to decisions taken by FIFA where the process is not correct: where what it approves is prejudicial to the football ecosystem. That's all I can say. At least I'll try. And not just us, anyway. The players have their well-being at heart and this type of competitions only brings money to a number of clubs and compresses the calendar”, he explained.
Liga, which warned in December that it would “study the relevant legal actions to prevent the Club World Cup from taking place in the format announced”. And about a week ago, according to As, he had already filed a complaint with the Tas. The Spanish sports newspaper wrote of a “conflict that arose in mid-December, when Infantino announced that he would revolutionize the Mundialito from 2025 to bring the participating teams to 32. Furthermore, he proposed including more matches in the 2026 World Cup. Two scenarios that are not national championships like it, especially the Spanish one, because it means saturating the calendar with even more matches.”
