GENEVA (Reuters) – The World Health Organization and about three-quarters of the world’s health professionals on Monday called on governments to take more action on climate at the COP26 global climate conference, pointing out that it could save millions of lives a year .
The UN health agency’s report on climate change and the area’s calls for transformative action across all sectors, including energy, transport and finance, points out that the benefits of ambitious climate action far outweigh its costs.
“The burning of fossil fuels is killing us. Climate change is the main health threat facing humanity,” the WHO said on Monday.
The WHO has previously said that around 13.7 million deaths a year, or around 24.3% of the global total, are due to environmental hazards such as air pollution and exposure to chemicals.
It is not clear exactly how many of these deaths are directly linked to climate change, although the director of Public Health and Environment at WHO, Maria Neira, said that about 80% of deaths due to air pollution could have been prevented if their guidelines were followed.
Climate change is also driving some infectious diseases such as dengue and malaria, causing deaths in some of the poorest regions on the planet, according to Diarmid Campbell-Lendrum, director of the WHO Climate Change unit.
“Our health is non-negotiable: we are going to climate negotiations, we are negotiating many things, but the life of one child, whether lost to air pollution or climate change, is not something that should be on the table “, he said.
