With the benefits scandal still fresh in mind, the CJIB is concerned about additional costs following a reminder.
The government is not there to torment you. Yet it can sometimes feel that way. Ask the parents about this in particular in the wake of the benefits scandal. In a similar situation, the Central Judicial Collection Agency (CJIB) sounds the alarm. They argue in the annual report for more customization when it comes to fines.
CJIB reminder
Anyone who receives a traffic fine must pay it as soon as possible. If you do not pay it by a certain date, a reminder will follow. This will incur additional costs. These costs can add up enormously. Sometimes people cannot pay the traffic fine in the first place for whatever reason, the increase will only cause this group more problems.
With a fine of 50 euros, the amount can already increase to 150 euros after two reminders. Then the extra costs are higher than the original fine itself. The CJIB says that sometimes there is force majeure on the part of the people. An increase of the fine is then not appropriate.
Not only can the fine not be paid, but such an increase also has a psychological effect on the recipient. Of course, there is a difference between accidentally running a red light and speeding down the highway at 200 km/h.
As far as the CJIB is concerned, there will be more customization for fines. Instead of mindlessly sending out increase after increase, look at the reason why the person in question cannot or does not want to pay. The CJIB may want that, but the organization is nothing more than an automatic collection agency of the Dutch government. It is ultimately up to the Ministry of Justice to have a say in this.
