He Hurricane John hits the coast of Guerrero Monday night, reaching land near Marquelia at 9:15 p.m. with sustained winds of 195 km/h. Classified as a Category 3 on the Saffir-Simpson scale, this system brought with it a minimum central pressure of 959 mb (28.32 inches), generating severe weather conditions along the southern Mexican Pacific coast.
Civil Protection immediately activated emergency protocols, Local authorities have advised people to stay indoors and pay attention to official instructions. The most affected areas, including towns near Marquelia, face a high risk of flooding, landslides and damage to infrastructure.
He President Andrés Manuel López Obrador urged the inhabitants of Guerrero to seek refuge in safe areasespecially in the highlands of the state, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing personal safety. In the neighboring state of Oaxaca, Puerto Escondido also began to take preventive measures against possible damage from the hurricane.
The Mexican government issued a Hurricane warning covering from Acapulco to Huatulco Bay, while a tropical storm warning was activated for the area comprised between Huatulco and Salina Cruz Bayswhere an important refinery of Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) is located.
Meanwhile, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) is monitoring the evolution of a new disturbance in the Caribbean, which could become a hurricane by Wednesday, threatening the Yucatan Peninsula and the Gulf of Mexico.
Warnings are in effect not only for Mexico, but also for Florida, where the system is expected to make landfall around Thursday. Oil producers in the United States have already begun evacuating personnel from their platforms in the Gulf, in anticipation of the storm’s imminent arrival.
