The Civil Defense of Bahia reported today (27) that 20 people died after the heavy rains that hit the southern region of the state in recent weeks. According to the agency, 31.4 thousand people are homeless (people who no longer have housing) and homeless (people who cannot access their homes). The rains affected 116 municipalities in the state.
The two most recent deaths were registered by authorities in Itabuna, where a 33-year-old woman collapsed and a 21-year-old boy was carried away by the current.
Of the total of 116 affected municipalities, around 100 declared an emergency situation.
So far, the federal government said it has invested around R$ 20 million from the National Civil Defense in efforts to serve the affected population. On Monday, the government of Bahia also announced the opening of a special credit line, of up to R$150,000 and with zero interest, to recover damaged commercial establishments.
