Citroen places limits on its future range and establishes limits beyond which it will not go. To put it simply: there will be no space for models that are too small or for models that are too large, the idea of the French brand is to focus solely on more mainstream segments. In concrete terms: Citroen’s future range will start with the B-segment C3, followed by the Ami, ending with the C-segment C5 Aircross.
From segment B to segment C
“Citroen must be present in the main segments, e.g not in the niche ones“, Thierry Koskas, CEO of the French brand, told Autocar. Citroen’s number one reiterated that the brand has no plans to replace the C1 due to the inability to make it profitable, and effectively excluded an heir to the D-segment C5 it’s doing poorly but it’s in a non-existent segment. “Citroen must be in the B and C segments as this is the heart of the brand“Koskas added.
The range of the future
Subsequently, the Citroen CEO also focused on smaller models: “There is a large gap for electric models with a price between 10,000 and 20,000 euros, between the Ami and the new e-C3, but when asked how to fill it it’s not easy to answer. We have no plans at the moment, but it’s all about how to fill this void. If you go into segment A with a C1 replacement you would expect to pay less than segment B, but the production costs for us are the same.”
Citroen’s strategy
Having reiterated that the B and C segments will be the ones where Citroen will compete most in the future, Koskas made it known that the brand’s future cars will not be conventional sedans or SUVs. The reason? “It’s in Citroen’s DNA suggest new things – explained the CEO of the French manufacturer – We will introduce new shapes that do not exist on future models, we know that we will take risks but we have to shake up the market, and we can do it. We will do this in the B and C segments, which represent the vast majority of the European market. That’s where we have to compete“.
Not just electric
Final comment on the breadth of Citroen’s future range. “How many models will we have? Not that many, there is no magic number, but what if we had five or six models well positioned and really attractive to customers, I would be happy with that. We expect the majority of our sales to be electric by 2030, but we want to continue producing internal combustion engine and hybrid models because as a popular brand we need to offer affordable mobility for everyone. We are clear about what we want to sell: affordable, simple and comfortable cars. We are not technological Christmas trees“.
