BRASÍLIA (Reuters) – The departure of senator and president of the PP, Ciro Nogueira (PI), to command the Civil House sparked a dance of chairs at the CPI of Covid do Senate, making room for senator Flávio Bolsonaro (Patriota-RJ) , the eldest son of President Jair Bolsonaro, to be part of the inquiry commission that has been harassing the federal government.
So far Flávio Bolsonaro had been participating sporadically in the CPI without being a full member. Now he will become an alternate for the CPI.
There was a triangulation. Ciro Nogueira was the holder of the CPI, but with his move to the government, his seat was occupied by co-religionist Luiz Carlos Heinze (RS), formerly a substitute. Immediately thereafter, Flávio Bolsonaro was chosen to occupy the seat of the gaucho senator.
The work of the CPI –interrupted during the July recess– has been one of the main concerns of the government, due to the advance of investigations into suspected irregularities in the purchase of vaccines against Covid-19.
The government has a minority in the collegiate, which should resume activities next week with testimonies.
The departure of Ciro Nogueira –an exponent of the center– to the government is seen as one of the government’s bets to improve its relationship with the Senate.
