If you’ve seen the first ‘Star Wars’ movie, which you almost certainly have, it’s impossible not to remember the moment in which the Death Star opens fire on the planet Alderaan, which ends up reduced to thousands of space rocks in just a moment. an instant. To achieve this, the empire’s gigantic space station projects eight rays that end up joining together to form a single, but highly powerful one. Well, according to the ‘South China Morning Post‘, a group of Chinese scientists has just developed a weapon that has a similar function.
According to the team, the system, which is designed for military purposes, combines several high-power electromagnetic waves that are ultimately concentrated on a single target. To make it work, scientists use seven microwave transmitter vehicles, which are located in different positions. From each of them a beam comes out that, finally, ends up uniting to hit the target.
According to the Chinese media, the invention, which has already been tested, “could revolutionize warfare and raise concerns about its possible impact on global security.” Now, for the weapon to function properly, everything must be perfectly measured.
The vehicles in charge of projecting the microwaves are located almost perfectly, the position error cannot exceed a few millimeters. The same thing happens with the time they have to take the shot, which cannot go above 170 picoseconds (that is, 170 billionths of a second).
Scientists built and tested the weapon in western China, where they had to resort to fiber optics, connected between the vehicles, to make the tests successful. ‘Live Science‘, a medium that echoes the news, points out that microwaves, like those used in this weapon, cannot work at long distances, since dust and humidity disperse them.
He also points out that although a system of this kind can work in an environment controlled by scientists, it is very difficult for it to do so in changing spaces, especially taking into account the great precision that is necessary in this case for it to be operational. Therefore, it is expected that the weapon will continue to develop so that at some point it will be possible to give it some use at a military level.
