The Chinese President Xi Jinping congratulated Colombian President-elect Gustavo Petroand stressed that relations between the two countries are at a new starting point, state media reported today.
In his message, sent on Saturday according to the official Xinhua agency, Xi was willing to work with Petro to “deepen political mutual trust, advance practical cooperation and work on further developing bilateral relations” for the benefit of the two countries.
The Chinese leader also stressed the importance of Colombia in Latin America. The progressive Gustavo Petro won the second presidential round on the 19th with almost 11.3 million votes (50.44%) compared to almost 10.6 million (47.31%) of his rival, the populist Rodolfo Hernandez.
