Within the framework of the “The Smart and European” Fair of Munich, the Basque Government has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Hithium, one of the main stationary batteries companies worldwide. This agreement involves a fundamental milestone to consolidate Euskadi as a European reference in the stationary energy storage industry.
The agreement, the result of a close collaboration between both parties, covers three strategic axes: technological collaboration, the active participation of Basque companies in the development of the project and the impulse of circularity in manufacturing. The shared objective is to develop a comprehensive solution that allows manufacturing stationary storage systems in Euskadi, in collaboration with an industrial partner of reference and with the support of Basque technology centers.
This alliance represents a decisive step in the strategy of locating the production and innovation capacity in Europe, making Euskadi not only a commercial point, but also the manufacturing and operations of Hithium in the south of the continent. This will allow to coordinate from Euskadi the production and distribution to other European markets, consolidating its role as a strategic center for Europe.
As the penetration of wind and solar energy in Europe increases, the need for advanced energy storage solutions that offer flexibility and guarantee the stability of the network grows. In this context, the Basque Government considers strategic not only to promote the industrialization of the energy transition, but also actively contribute to the reduction of emissions through efficient and sustainable storage technologies. Stationary batteries are included in the Basque list of clean technologies, and therefore are subject to a tax deduction of 35%.
In this way, the Basque Government reaffirms its commitment to a sustainable energy transition, promoting the development of a more competitive, efficient and low emissions industry. This collaboration with Hithium reflects Euskadi’s commitment to a more efficient and sustainable industry, under the motto: “More industry, better industry, less emissions.”
Manufacture in Euskadi of stationary batteries
The Minister of Industry, Energy Transition and Sustainability, Mikel Jauregi, has filed the agreement this morning during the Plenary of Control in the Basque Parliament. “The investment in electrical infrastructure in Euskadi is a necessity and an opportunity. Among other things because we have world -order world producers in electrical goods and equipment.”
“Since I arrived at the Government I have insisted on the need to invest in the electricity grid and develop more renewable energies. If they have an inconvenience, it is precisely their volatility. From the electric blackout this reality is more evident, if possible. Therefore, storage is our priority,” Jauregi stressed.
“The Basque Government has been working on the stationary storage of energy for some time. We do not refer only to install batteries, but we want according to Hithium is the result of them, “concluded the counselor.
Founded in 2019 and headquarters in Xiamen, China, is one of the main global actors in energy storage. Its international expansion has been remarkable, with presence in the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, Türkiye, Dubai, Singapore, Australia and other countries. With this collaboration, Hithium advances in his commitment to locate production and innovation capabilities in Europe to offer optimized solutions and comply with European technical standards.
