The Chinese foreign ministry has summoned the ambassador of Japan following the statements made by former premier Shinzo Abe, who said that Japan and the United States will not stand by if China attacks Taiwan.
These are “irresponsible” statements and a “brutal intervention” in China’s internal affairs, Chinese Deputy Foreign Minister Hua Chunying commented during a meeting with Ambassador Shui Hideo. Japan should not “underestimate the determination and strength of the Chinese people,” he added.
Abe had told an event organized by a Taiwanese think tank that an eventual emergency for Taiwan would also be seen as such by the US-Japan alliance, highlighting the serious economic damage to Beijing if it decides to invade the island.
