The chip war between the United States and China seems to have no end and the Chinese government has ordered telephone carriers to abandon Intel and AMD hardware.
The disastrous international geopolitical panorama is not only dotted with military conflicts: in fact, to strike enemy countries it is not always necessary to use weapons and “kinetic” attacks. China and the United States know this well and have been waging a tense battle on the technology front for years now. According to what was reported by the Wall Street Journal, the Chinese government recently forced the country's telephone operators to abandon chips produced by American companiesespecially Intel and AMD.
China: goodbye to Intel and AMD chips
According to a recent article published by the Wall Street Journal, China intends to eliminate foreign-made chips from its telecommunications systems: Chinese government officials would therefore have ordered the suppliers of the related services not to use foreign technology, particularly of American origin, with the aim of becoming completely autonomous by 2027. The companies most involved would be Intel and AMD.
The order would have come directly from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and would provide for the launch of an investigation to identify foreign chips, complete with programming for the removal and replacement of the hardware.
Chinese networks in fact they make extensive use of Intel and AMD chipsa characteristic that would worry the Chinese government, especially given the segment involved: telecommunications are in fact a “sensitive” sector.
The chip war
The Chinese government's move falls within the context of the technological war that the Asian giant is fighting with the United States: in particular, this measure would be a direct consequence of American blockades on Chinese smartphone manufacturers. The United States has also banned the sale of the most advanced AI chips produced by NVIDIA and AMD on Chinese soil.
At the same time, China has started the development of its own processors: last year the first 5G chip for Huawei smartphones debuted and the goal of the Chinese technology industry is to reach the quality of Intel's opponents. The American company, for its part, has launched a new program for the internal production of its own chips.
