China denied that Russia had asked for military help to invade Ukraine, as reported by US media citing officials from that country.
“It is completely false, it is pure misinformation. China has made its position on the crisis in Ukraine clear and consistent. We play a constructive role and assess the situation impartially and independently. Denigrating China’s position is not acceptable“, Foreign spokesman Zhao Lijian said today at a press conference.
In addition, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, quoted by the Chinese state news agency, assured that his country does not want to be affected by Western sanctions against Russia.
“China is not part of the crisis (Ukrainian) and even fewer want to be affected by sanctions“, were the words of Wang in a telephone conversation with his Spanish colleague, José Manuel Albares.
Is China supporting Russia?
According to US officials, quoted among other media by ‘CNN’ and ‘The New York Times’, China may have already given an answer and affirmed that if such assistance were given, it could change the “situation of the forces” on the ground and be a counterweight to the harsh sanctions imposed on the Russian economy by the West
‘The New York Times’ indicated that Moscow has also asked China for additional economic support to help counteract the blow to the Russian economy from harsh sanctions imposed by the United States and European and Asian countries.
China has so far avoided condemning Russia’s actions in Ukraine, calling it “invasion“, while he has insisted so much on “respect for the territorial integrity of all countries” and in the attention that should be paid to the “legitimate security demands” of Russia.
They have always maintained a solid cooperation in the energy field
Chinese spokesmen have also reiterated that China opposes unilateral sanctions because “they do not bring peace and security” otherwise “serious financial difficulties” to “the inhabitants of the affected countries“.
“They escalate the confrontation and lead to a win-lose scenario.spokesman Zhao said last week, referring to the US embargo of Russian oil and gas in retaliation for the Russian offensive in Ukraine.
China and Russia”have always maintained a solid cooperation in the energy field” and “will continue to conduct trade cooperation including oil and gasZhao explained, adding that the exchanges will take place in a spirit of “mutual respect and benefit and equality“.
