On Saturday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi called on Ukraine and Russia not to let their conflict “escalate”.
“We call on all concerned parties to prevent the crisis from worsening and to protect the legitimate rights and interests of developing countries,” he said, in his address to the United Nations General Assembly.
He stressed that “the priority is to facilitate peace negotiations,” calling for a “peaceful solution to the Ukrainian crisis” through “frank and pragmatic” discussions.
The Chinese minister met in New York with his Ukrainian counterpart Dmytro Kuleba, assuring him that Beijing calls for respect for the “territorial integrity of all countries.”
“The basic solution is to dispel legitimate concerns related to the security of all parties, and build a balanced, effective and lasting security architecture,” Wang Yi added.
Following his meeting last week with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin welcomed his counterpart’s “balanced position” on Ukraine, stressing at the same time that he “understands his concerns” in this regard.
