The country also announced tax exemptions for those affected by forest fires; Chile has already confirmed 122 deaths since Thursday (1.Feb.2024)
With 122 deaths from forest fires since last Thursday, the Chilean government decreedthis Monday (5.Feb.2024), curfew in the provinces of Valparaíso – which brings together some of the country's main tourist destinations – and Marga Marga.
Forest fires have been affecting Chile since Thursday (1.Feb.2024). President Gabriel Boric had already declared an emergency in the provinces.
The curfew starts at 9pm this Monday until 5am on Tuesday (Feb 6).
To try to minimize financial problems for the affected population, Finance Minister Mario Marcel also released tax measures targeted at these communities.
The country announced tax exemption for the following measures:
- tax exemption for donations sent from abroad;
- exemption from customs fees to speed up the import processes of products and support materials for affected families;
- automatic waiver of all surcharges linked to late tax payments;
- creating a mechanism to report inventory losses and adjust assessments of affected properties for tax payment;
- increasing the deadline for declaring VAT, paying pension contributions and paying tax;
- immediate activation of insurance and commercial support mechanisms through the state bank and postponement of 6 installments for those who have credit contracted with the institution;
- enabling the Electronic Family Pocket for repurchasing belongings and rebuilding homes.
- provision of a consultation system for contracted insurance on the Chilean State website.
