CHILE: ONE YEAR LATER. Santiago. The ceremonies arranged by the military government to mark the first anniversary of the coup that altered the destiny of Chile a year ago on September 11 will be quite sober. The date will be observed with only two events: a solemn mass at the War Academy and a single speech by the president of the Military Junta and Head of State, General Augusto Pinochet. Such sobriety contrasts with the roar of rockets and the rattle of machine guns that dealt the final blow to the leftist regime of President Salvador Allende and gave way to the birth of a harsh military government in 1973. Allende, a declared Marxist who was elected president in September 1970 for a six-year term, committed suicide in the Presidential Palace itself, which was burning in flames when it was stormed by troops on the day of the coup, according to an announcement by the new government. Thus ended Allende’s last attempt to politically transform Chile into a socialist state, ending the social and economic chaos engendered by the experiment. The Military Junta, made up of four high-ranking military leaders, one of the most rigid of the military governments ever to come to power in South America, installed a nationalist regime, violently anti-communist and determined to maintain law and order by force.

Teachers of the Sierra live in fearThere is uncertainty and fear among teachers assigned to schools in the mountain region. It is a fact that most of them do not want to be there, and the violent cases that have occurred in some towns are the best excuse to request their transfer, reported the SEP. Despite the obstacles and dangers to which they may be exposed, teachers remain in the mountains, even on weekends, when they try to identify and interact with the inhabitants of the communities.
H. MUBARAK INJURED. Port Said. A man, a common criminal, grazed the arm of President Hosni Mubarak, 71, with a sharp object as he drove through the northern city. The attacker was shot dead by presidential guards; Mubarak has survived three assassinations. His predecessor, Anwar Sadat, was assassinated in 1981 by Islamic militants angry over the signing of a peace treaty with Israel in 1979. Sadat was then vice president and became president.
