Although Fifa initially dismissed the lawsuit from the Chilean National Professional Football Association (ANFP) for the alleged improper alignment of Byron Castillo, a player from Ecuador, during the South American qualifying rounds for the Qatar 2022 World Cup, the novel seems far from over.
This week, The Brazilian Eduardo Carlezzo, ANFP lawyer in the Byron Castillo case, assured in an interview with the Chilean newspaper ‘El Mercurio’ that the first ruling was “unfair”, that he has new evidence and that they will not throw in “the towel” to go to the Worldcup.
In fact, according to the Chilean press, when asked if he believed that the “Red” will go to Qatar, the lawyer replied: “Chile manages to play the World Cup.”
(In context: Byron Castillo: Fifa’s reasons for Ecuador to go to the World Cup and not Chile).
‘One of the biggest injustices I saw in my life’
“It is full of misunderstandings, contradictions and hasty interpretations of the facts. On a first reading, one could be frightened by the arguments that are launched to dismiss the claim. They seem to be hard and without a solution, ”Carlezzo declared about the ruling that Fifa issued last Friday, June 10.
“They seem to have looked at the tests we sent out in a cursory way and without much understanding of the context.”added the lawyer about the verdict in the talk with ‘El Mercurio’.

Regarding the appeals process that is coming for the ANFP, first before Fifa and then before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (TAS, for its acronym in French), Carlezzo stated: “Analyzing the historical record of the appeals committee, in most of the cases the decisions of the disciplinary commission are upheld. But in this ruling I see one of the greatest injustices I have seen in my life as a lawyer. We can lose, but it would be a gigantic injustice”.
“We want to believe that the appeal committee will have a broad and technical appreciation of our evidence and allegations, and that with that the first instance ruling can be reversed. By no means are we throwing in the towel.”added the lawyer.
Finally, asked if Chile can dream of going to the World Cup, Carlezzo would have assured, according to the review of ‘BiobioChile’, “‘Chile manages to play the World Cup. It is possible. Obviously it is tight and that unforeseen situations can arise that change everything , but if the system works properly, and I want to understand that it will, there is a deadline. We have new evidence. We never stop for a second to investigate”.
