19 children fell ill on the weekend after bathing in a lake. So far, however, the authorities have been puzzled.
Rostock – At least 19 children fell ill after bathing in a lake in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. After coming into contact with the water of the “Tiefer Ziest” lake near Teterow in the Rostock district, they complained of nausea, vomiting and fever. Two children even had to go to the hospital. This is reported by the NDR, among others. However, it is still completely unclear what caused the symptoms.

The parents of the children therefore reported to the police at the weekend, who informed the mayor of the nearby community of Lalendorf and the district’s health department.
Then the water of the lake was examined in the laboratory. However, these tests did not give a clear result. According to this, cercaria, i.e. suction worm larvae, and blue-green algae are at least not the cause of the children’s illness.
“The water is clear, shows no abnormalities, no wild bird populations, at the bathing area also no corresponding droppings, no pollution”, cited among others nordkurier from a communication from the Rostock district. Nevertheless, there is still the possibility that faecal germs are responsible for the sometimes violent reactions, reports the NDR. This is still being checked.
However, the diseases remain a mystery for the time being. Especially since there is no known case in which adults had similar problems after bathing in the lake. In addition, the children did not belong to any group. Even a joint food poisoning (for example from ice cream bought on the same ice cream truck) could be ruled out by the district as a cause.
The body of water is currently closed after the incident. (rjs)
