Chihuahua, Chih.- With a rate of 186.6 deaths per one hundred thousand inhabitants during the first three months of 2024, the state of Chihuahua ranked fourth nationally in terms of the highest death rate in the country.
The causes for which Chihuahuans lost their lives range from heart problems, which are the main cause of death, to homicides, which occupy fifth place, as reported in the document called Statistics of Registered Deaths, EDR, from the INEGI, published in this month of September.
The INEGI explained that in Mexico, between January and March 2024, 212,404 registered deaths were preliminarily recorded; 4,965 more compared to the same period in 2023. The deaths that were recorded and occurred in the period amounted to 196,261. This information was obtained through death certificates from the Civil Registry offices and forensic medical services, as well as death certificates from the former and statistical notebooks from the Public Ministry Agencies.
Of this national total, 7,285 deaths occurred in Chihuahua from January to March of this year. These are divided by sex of the deceased, so 4,232 correspond to men and the rest of the deaths, 3,053 correspond to women.
Although the causes of death are very varied, the report indicates the five main causes of death of the Chihuahuan population. Among them are mainly heart diseases that claimed the lives of 1,735, of this number 768 were women, and 966 men.
Diabetes mellitus is the second cause of death with a total of 771 records, of which 399 were women and 372 men. In third place are malignant tumors, of this total 393 were women and 370 were men.
In fourth place is influenza and pneumonia, which in the first quarter of the year claimed the lives of 518 Chihuahuans, of which 229 were women and 289 men.
Finally, there are attacks or homicides, which in Chihuahua reached 473 victims. Of this total of people murdered, most of them were men with a total of 421 cases, while the rest, 52 were women.
