Ciudad Juarez.- Chihuahua is one of the six states with the lowest proportion of state police, with a rate of 0.3 officers per 100,000 inhabitants. This is according to the 2024 National Census of State Public Security (CNSPE) of Inegi.
According to federal figures, Sinaloa, Jalisco and Querétaro had the same percentage, followed by Baja California with 0.2 and Coahuila with 0.1; the latter have a lower rate of state officers than Chihuahua. In addition, their rate is below the national rate, which is 0.7 police officers.
In this sense, Tabasco (1.5), Campeche (1.5), Nayarit (1.3), Tamaulipas (1.2) and Yucatán (1.1) are the entities with the most preventive elements per 100 thousand inhabitants.
Regarding personnel, the state of Mexico, Veracruz de Ignacio de la Llave and Oaxaca concentrated 14.5, 8.6 and 5.8% of the personnel assigned to state public security institutions.
Last year, Chihuahua registered a total of 4,595 members, 3,108 men and 1,487 women.
This includes the owners and only the operational and administrative staff.
The census also revealed that during 2023, a total of 18,417 people were arrested by state police, of which 15,581 were referred to Civic Courts and 2,826 to the Public Prosecutor’s Office.
Regarding the police organization, 111,478 people were assigned to police corporations. Of this personnel, 77.8% (86,751) belonged to the Preventive Police; 8.8% (9,794) to the Banking, Commercial and/or Auxiliary Police; 6.4% (7,108) to the Traffic Police and 7.0% (7,825) to another type of corporation.
Of the total national staff, 25.5% of men received gross monthly incomes of 10,001 to 15,000 pesos; while 28.1% of women received between 15,001 and 20,000 pesos. According to schooling, 51.6% of men and 41.2% of women had high school studies.
In addition, in Chihuahua in 2023, 367 officers resigned, 119 were injured, 19 retired, and 24 died.
Of the personnel assigned to state Public Security institutions, it is noteworthy that 6,170 people resigned, 2,134 suffered injuries, 996 retired, and eight were reported missing or not located.
