If there is one thing that titles without a very high budget can do, that is to dare, perhaps even touching particularly thorny themes that hardly fit the blockbuster formula, while putting in place original ideas ready to vary their own as much as possible. formula. The perfect example for this type of headline is Chernobylite, game released on PC of which we have already had the opportunity to talk to you in the course of ours review (you can find it at this link), and that finally – after a slight postponement due to technical problems – has also landed on console. We went back to the terrifying lands of Chernobyl proposed by the guys of The Farm 51 in order to find out how the work behaves outside the computer world, and we want to tell you about it in this review dedicated to the console version, so PlayStation 4 And Xbox One from Chernobylite. Obviously, the title is also playable on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X / S, thanks to the backwards compatibility feature of next-gen consoles.
The evil of living
As if just woke up from a bad dream, Igor he looks around in fear and realizes that he is inside an endless nightmare. Everything that had motivated him to go on and that had encouraged him to proceed in his work now seems to be a distant and painful memory. It has been 30 years since the terrible accident of Chernobyl, but Igor never abandoned those lifeless lands, hoping to find the truth about what really happened on the night of April 26, 1986. Thanks to his knowledge as a physicist, Igor will try to reconstruct the events of that night, to finally rejoin his own loved, who disappeared during the accident.
The intriguing storyline, which is convincingly staged thanks to a storytelling compelling, manages to perfectly convey the sense of anguish and post-accident desolation, thanks also to an excellent level design and to aatmosphere overall really spot on. The RPG heart of the work then manages to perfectly involve the player and ensures that each choice is able to shape the adventure in a different way. Each option of dialogue and every path taken leads to a river of possibilities e influence substantially the campaign.
In a devastated territory like the one in which it is set Chernobylite, it quickly becomes clear how essential it is to find and make the best use of one’s resources. The team of The Farm 51 it has in fact implemented profound mechanics survival, which allow the player to immerse themselves even more in this terrifying and complex adventure horror. Workbenches scattered around the points of interest allow you to combine more materials and resources to obtain better equipment and tools. A fundamental part of the game is certainly the management not only of resources, but also of the base camp of the protagonist. Indeed, Chernobylite presents an important cmanagement component which allows the player to touch this other aspect of survival in the area devastated by the explosion of the electronuclear reactor. Rationing supplies and caring for survivors are secondary activities, but they are very important for progression purposes.
Step back
What immediately catches the eye in Chernobylite, in addition to the macabre as well as splendid and faithful setting of the game that we have already mentioned in our review, are certainly the mechanics action from first person shooter and the stealth component. Thanks to a well-crafted and rather satisfying gunplay, the most eventful phases of the game flow smoothly and smoothly, but unfortunately collide with a very low level of challenge, penalized above all by a very limited variety of enemies to face. For those who aim to act silently in the shadows, The Farm 51 has implemented several mechanics that allow you to build interesting strategies stealth. Although rather sketchy and heavily penalized by a Definitely subdued AI, in Chernobylite there is in fact an important stealth component. With very few exceptions, it is left to the player total freedom of approach: it will be up to you to decide how to deal with the enemies, whether silently or by putting everything on fire.
The comparison with the PC version of the game, unfortunately, highlights several problems regarding the technical side. Despite the fact that in our review of Chernobylite on PC we had widely praised the graphic sector, which, especially on the most performing platforms, was able to return glimpses and settings really nice, the same cannot be said of the console version, which hardly comes close to quality “average”Of the title on PC. Texture low resolution e polygonal models not at all up to expectations, together with some rather woody animations, unfortunately, do nothing but lower the general quality of a really interesting production with a well-made play sector.
Fortunately, everything is raised by the aforementioned level design, which is really excellent and allows you to play in a very faithful reproduction of the areas around the Chernobyl reactor. To ensure that the settings are even more suggestive, we think about it wonderful soundtrack. Within the title of The Farm 51, in fact, we find several truly inspired songs, able to create the right tension for the duration of the game. The dubbing, in English, has some smudges, but it is all in line with production and, fortunately, the texts and interface are all localized in Italian.
