The Blues have found success twice in five games, between the Premier League and the Champions League. For the Toffees, the situation risks getting out of hand
What we have seen in the latest releases, between the Premier League and the Champions League, is a fluctuating Chelsea. Two victories in five games is the recent spoils of the European champions, in the league returning from the suffered victory against Leeds: 3-2 with a decisive penalty converted by Jorginho in full recovery. On the penultimate day of the Premier League, Tuchel’s men had lost with the same result at West Ham, before drawing against Zenit in Europe. In short, at Chelsea there are some problems to register. So much so that Manchester City and Liverpool, very fast, are now in front. The next match for the Blues is the match against Everton, in the midweek round of the Premier League.
Everton
–
The Toffees cannot find continuity of results. The team coached by Rafa Benitez have won only one of their last ten league games, against Arsenal on the penultimate day (2-1 comeback with goals in the final by Richarlison and Demarai Gray). The balance is completed by seven defeats and two draws: in the last round came the knockout on the field of Crystal Palace for 3-1. In short, the situation at Everton is likely to get out of hand: the points in the standings are 18, with an advantage of six points over the third-bottom Burnley (who, however, has one game less).
Precedents and Lukaku
–
In recent seasons there has been a constant back and forth between the two teams. One win each in both 2019/20 and 2020/21: last year Everton won 1-0 at home (Sigurdsson’s goal with Carlo Ancelotti on the bench) before losing 2-0 at Stamford Bridge by own-goal by Godfrey and penalty converted by Jorginho. The last draw was on 11 November 2018, 0-0 at Chelsea. It is to be understood whether Romelu Lukaku will be at the center of the Blues attack, so the challenge at Everton will never be like the others: 166 appearances and 87 goals for the Belgian with the Toffees shirt. But with or without Big Rom, Chelsea can’t afford to lose any more points on the road. Will Everton be able to recover?
