Jorge Rodríguez, president of the National Assembly of Venezuela and head of Nicolás Maduro’s delegation in talks with the opposition in Mexico, has declared that the Bolivarian revolution is ready to resume the process of political dialogue with the opposition, suspended at the end of last year after the capture of Alex Saab. Of course, with new conditions and new dialogue actors, among which could be opponents close to Chavismo, who are disparagingly known as scorpions.
Rodríguez has offered a new interpretation with what, in his opinion, should be the constitutive elements of the dialogue. He argued that this process “must be inclusive”, that is, “that all sectors of the social and economic field, civil society, academics, professionals, popular worshipers, businessmen, can be represented in it.” And he also commented that the calls for dialogue “must interpret the current historical circumstances of the country and the current political map of the nation,” which is why “we think that all the factions of the opposition, and not just one of them , you must participate in this process.”
After the commented rapprochement between Caracas and senior White House officials, Rodríguez invoked Maduro’s words regarding the need to “reformat” the national dialogue process, in order to broaden the spectrum of consultations with the entire country and Strengthen your content. In addition, he said that the Government will undertake this task immediately. The Chavista leader appeared before the press at the Federal Legislative Palace at the exit of a meeting of the so-called Special Commission for Dialogue, Peace and National Reconciliation, created last year, in which minority dissident sectors close to Chavismo also participate. , present in the current Parliament with their benches, and who accompanied Rodríguez in the speech.
“Venezuela is at this moment a country that is completely at peace,” Rodríguez said, commenting that in the elections for governors and mayors held last December “absolutely all the political forces that exist in Venezuela participated.” Miraflores intends to open several fronts to exercise political dialogue and try to strengthen its external position and its internal authority, highly questioned by broad layers of the population in the stormy processes of street protests and conflict in recent times. The small improvement in the country’s economic situation has allowed Maduro to regain some support numbers in the polls. Maduro seeks to further weaken the platform of Juan Guaidó, his main enemy, the leader of the opposition and whom more than fifty countries recognized as interim president at the beginning of 2019. To do this, he tries to take advantage of the cracks between the opposition parties.
Gerardo Blyde, on behalf of the opposition delegation, has made several calls to the Maduro government to resume the work sessions in Mexico and try to reach stable agreements that guarantee the resolution of the economic crisis, the return of democracy and the restitution of the political rights of all Venezuelans. The International Contact Group – made up of Germany, Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Spain, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Panama, Portugal, the Dominican Republic, Sweden, the European Union and Uruguay – issued a statement a little over a month ago in which urges the parties to come back to the table.
