The General Comptroller of Venezuela, subservient to Chavismo, announced the political disqualification of five more opposition figures, who were potential candidates for municipal and state elections in 2025.
According to the controller's announcement, mayors Elías Sayegh, from the municipality of El Hatillo, in the Metropolitan Region of Caracas, were ineligible for a period of 15 years; José Antonio Fernández López, from the municipality of Los Salias, in the state of Miranda (central region of the country); and former deputies Tomás Guanipa and Carlos Ocariz.
Another oppositionist, former deputy Juan Carlos Caldera, was disqualified for 12 months.
The measure follows the pattern of the General Comptroller, which already disqualified opposition leader Henrique Capriles in 2017 and last year confirmed the ineligibility of María Corina Machado, who would later win the opposition primaries for the presidential election on July 28 this year.
“No matter what they do, or how they do it, nothing distracts us, no one takes us off the electoral path. On July 28th, everyone must vote!”, wrote Guanipa on X after the announcement of his disqualification.
