“I really hope that after seeing the film people look at their family in a different way,” says the American director. Byron howard (Oscar winner in 2016 for Zootopia) with respect to the recent premiere of Encanto, the new animated film from Walt Disney Animation Studios, which has already been on theaters in the country since yesterday.
The film follows the Madrigal, a large family that lives in the mountains of Colombia in a magical house and a vibrant town called Encanto, which has blessed all its members with unique gifts ranging from strength to the power to heal. To all except Mirabel. But when she discovers that the magic surrounding Encanto is in danger, Mirabel realizes that she could be the last hope for her exceptional family.
Byron Howard worked on the shoot hand in hand with Jared bush (co-director and writer). “We have spent five years learning about our families, meeting people. The most exciting thing is that this film needed 8,000 people, 8,000 people who had their hearts in history and who went home because of the covid and made the film at home, with their families. And this film also takes place in a house and with a family ”, explains Bush as a metaphor.

For Byron howard, who also directed the film Bolt, the big question that Encanto asks “is how you see your family and how your family sees you”.
Adds Jared Bush: “I think what’s amazing about the film is two things: First, I got to know my family. Not that I didn’t know them, but there were different parts of her that I didn’t know and hadn’t been able to see in my entire life. And I was happy to take a trip like this. The other thing was spending time in Colombia, making friends, spending time with families, it was an absolute joy. In these five years we have received a lot of help from people who opened our eyes and taught us to improve the path. And now I have friends for life who came out of it. “
The famous duo, who talk to La República through Zoom, says that they chose to focus the story of Encanto on Colombia, “Because we fell in love with that country: We have two documentary filmmakers of Colombian origin who began to familiarize us with things from Colombia. We were very inspired by the feeling that country aroused in us, by the diversity, by the music, there is magic everywhere ”, says Howard, who is enthusiastic about the idea of exploring other cultures, such as Peru, for his next projects . “Yes, it would be amazing. We would love. Latin American culture is so vast, different and beautiful because of the traditions it maintains. I think that Encanto is just the beginning of many films that will explore Latin American culture ”.

They both agree that this trip has been inspiring and magical for themselves. “Movies are a great opportunity for audiences to start talking and asking questions about common and important topics. I hope that when people see Encanto they will ask questions about his family, ”says Howard.
“One of the greatest joys of the film was the friendships we made in the process and seeing incredible people work their art with so much passion,” Bush ends.
