I.In the dispute over how to deal with the US slavery legacy, the city of Charlottesville has dismantled several monuments. Among other things, the statues of the Southern States Generals Robert E. Lee and Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson were dismantled and taken away on Saturday to the applause of dozens of people. They come to a warehouse, as the city in the US state of Virginia announced.
A dispute over the fate of the statue of Lee had led to heated arguments in 2017. During a violent demonstration by right-wing groups for the preservation of the memorial, one female counter-demonstrator was killed and several other demonstrators were injured.
The then US President Donald Trump blamed “both sides” – right-wing extremists and counter-demonstrators – for the violence in Charlottesville. Even party friends and the army leadership then distanced themselves from Trump and demanded a clear condemnation of hatred and racism.
