With fuel prices soaring, drivers across Brazil are looking for ways to save on car departures. The finance specialist at Fintech Financial Education Plan, Jose Leonardo de Campos, highlights the importance of comparing prices.
“With the rise, the difference in value between posts can be considerable. A few cents less in the price of a liter can become a few tens of reais in each full tank, and even a few hundred reais at the end of the month”, he calculates.
Also, he suggests reducing car usage. “Some small changes in your routine can make you use the car less and save money, for example, instead of going to the market once a week, go every 15 days. Thus, you save on fuel and on the market.”

Optimize car usage through sharing and carpooling. Here, a good example can be taking the children to and from school. Instead of going back and forth every day, look for a group of parents with children in the same school and arrange for each one to travel once or twice a week, for example.
Furthermore, experts point out that fuel consumption is related to the way you drive. It is possible to save by adopting small changes, check out:
1- Respect the shifting of gears – Try to change gears always in the correct rotation, keeping the engine rotation compatible with the chosen gear.
2- Keep maintenance up to date – Maintenance up to date prevents the engine from consuming more fuel than necessary, in addition to increasing the component’s useful life. It is important to regularly check and, if necessary, change the air, oil and fuel filters and replace the spark plugs.
3- Use of air conditioning – The use of air conditioning is directly linked to fuel consumption, as the equipment is operated by the engine. Cars with smaller displacement spend more with the air turned on. So use it only when you really need it.
4- Do not accelerate with the car disengaged – Warming up the engine before leaving, nowadays, has become unnecessary, since the thrusters have electronic injection. The current system manages to make the car go even in the cold. For flex models, remember to fill the cold starting six pack. In addition to wasting fuel for nothing, warming up the engine in a car with electronic injection can wear out the parts and shorten their useful life.
5- Avoid carrying a lot of weight in the car – Always having a full car also contributes to increased fuel consumption. Loads above 10 kilos already influence consumption, as the engine will have to exert more force to put the vehicle in motion. Try to take only what you need in the car, avoiding storing suitcases and heavy things.
6- Check tire pressure – Driving with tires in good condition is essential to save fuel. Flat tires directly influence the vehicle’s performance, as they generate more friction with the road.
7- Keep the alignment and balance up to date – Correct alignment makes the tires wear less and the balance prevents vibrations when running. In addition, they prevent the increase in friction of the tires on the ground beyond what is necessary and do not let the vehicle lose performance.
8- Do not accelerate with the car stopped at the traffic lights – When you are stopped at the traffic lights, acceleration is unnecessary and contributes to emptying the tank faster. Another practice that helps the economy is to always watch the traffic ahead and, when you notice that the traffic will stop, decelerate the vehicle gradually before braking. With the car in gear but not accelerating, the electronic injection sends less fuel to the engine.
9- Avoid accelerating and braking abruptly – Driving aggressively, in addition to being dangerous, is also not interesting when the objective is to save fuel. To prevent engine wear, it’s important to shift gears smoothly and measure foot force on the accelerator so you don’t waste fuel.
10- Keep a constant speed – The heavy traffic in big cities also contributes to the fuel going away faster, as it is very common to walk and stop all the time. Acceleration and braking put more demands on the engine and increase consumption.
11- Leaving the car in neutral on descents – Although many people believe that it is economical to leave the car in neutral, this practice is not recommended for safety reasons. If the car is disengaged and without engine brake assistance, the brake system will be more demanding and may fail. In this case, the tip is to leave the car in the highest gear, even without accelerating.
