The drainage system and road safety will be improved in section one, of 1.5 kilometers, between the neighborhoods of San Diego and Apolonia
The work was in its initial phase and will suffer a break of between three and six months for the realization of “substantial” improvements in the project. The construction of section one of the central ring road of the city, 1.5 kilometers long, which will connect the neighborhoods of San Diego and Apolonia, began in June and will now be interrupted to draft the modifications that affect two different points of the section , confirmed to THE TRUTH the general director of Roads, José Antonio Fernández Lladó.
He explained that the City Council’s request to increase the drainage capacity of the road will be addressed with the reduction of the projected slope by almost two meters in some points of the section. In addition, the initially planned transversal drainage system will also be replaced by a buried collector that will collect runoff water to drain into the Guadalentín River. This collector will be located between four of the five roundabouts that will be built to resolve the intersections of the road and will have an approximate length of 600 meters.
In addition, the Ministry will take advantage of this improved drainage to reinforce road safety on the highway by reducing the slope of the entrance and exit ramps of the tunnel that is planned to be built under the railroad tracks. In this way, “it will considerably improve access to the underpass, especially from the point of view of safety for the user,” said Fernández Lladó. This crossing “will be carried out with a structure executed in situ, either with the typology of a bridge with prefabricated beams or a frame”. The dimensions of the underpass will be 34 meters long and 22 meters wide.
The changes will not entail an increase in the initially planned budget, 5.6 million euros
The CEO explained that “at the moment we are in time to make the appropriate improvements so that this important infrastructure has the highest security standards.” He clarified that the modifications will not involve an increase in the initial budget, set at 5.6 million euros financed with the funds of the loan granted to the Autonomous Community by the European Investment Bank. The road maintains the projected dimensions: it will be seven meters wide with two lanes of 3.5 meters and a median of one meter. The right lane will have a bike lane and a sidewalk will be arranged on the left lane.

The stoppage time depends on the drafting and approval of the modified project and the authorizations of the Segura Hydrographic Confederation. When the works are restarted, the execution period will be ten months, so, according to the forecasts, they should conclude at the latest in February 2023.
