After the historic qualification to the quarter-finals of the European competition, the girls from Montemurro aim to extend the record of victories and dare even more in the European field
2021 by Juventus Women was a year of change, innovation and record. In Italy a story without history: in Serie A they won every match of the calendar year, therefore Scudetto and Supercoppa. The rise in Europe was instead a consequence of the change of guard on the bench in the summer, with the departure of coach Rita Guarino (who gave life and shape to the winning project in its early years) and with the arrival of mister Joe Montemurro (who brought a more European gaming mentality). And a positive visionary behind the success: the director Stefano Braghin, the one who could have maintained the status of the club to national successes but wanted to raise the bar by partly going against the tide.
FROM SERIE A TO ENTERPRISE IN CHAMPIONS
–
At the dawn of the new season, the Juventus manager spoke of an ambitious goal: to increase Juve’s status in European women’s football. It seemed like a distant goal, but then the girls gathered self-esteem and awareness along the seasonal path, until they reached the historic qualification for the quarter-finals of the Women’s Champions League: unthinkable until recently. “It was a good story but it’s not over yet,” admits Braghin. “It was an emotion for all those who contributed to this unexpected and unexpected goal, but as the games went by we realized more and more that the goal was attainable and close.”
CHANGE
–
How much Juve is continuing to collect in its growth path it also owes to the work done during the past years in the Guarino era. Also because, admits Braghin: “The results we are collecting are the result of the work of four and a half of all the people who have been there for a day, a month, three or four years. Nobody makes us win or lose games but everyone helps us get to where we are ”. So the change, almost unexpected, last summer: “It was an unusual choice in a conservative world of success. But the fans live in the present and when the present is good they would like it to never change. The difference between a fan and a manager is that a manager must think about the future and something that does not yet exist and must imagine it. It is also the beauty of our work, with all the risks it entails. After twenty-five years of this work, I believe that good faith and serenity choices go beyond any fear. I have been linked to this club for ten years and it seemed to me that it was the right time to do something right for my club, so I did it. ”
THE TECHNICAL GUIDE
–
Montemurro, a simple person who immediately created a strong empathy with the whole environment, chose Juve because he strongly believed in the project. He himself, already on arrival, said that the staff without reinforcements had all the credentials to establish themselves even at the European level. “His story says that he is a world-class coach – Braghin thought -. Like all the great people I have worked with in Sport he is a simple one. He makes things that seem difficult very easy.”
THE OBJECTIVES
–
And in 2022? “We expect what you should expect when you are Juventus: to win everything you can or at least do your best to reach the goals. The competitiveness of the Italian teams is growing, our status at an international level is also growing and therefore the expectations are growing. We will have to do better than we have done to date. It is clear that in Europe the scenarios will change because thanks to this season we have gone from thirty-third place to eighteenth in the Uefa ranking. We have helped Italy to reach seventh in the Uefa ranking, close to the sixth place that would avoid the preliminaries. So we help the whole movement hoping that other Italian teams will be able to be the bearers of points. We must consolidate in Italy and continue climbing in Europe “.
