Banca Ifis, the 12th edition of the NPL Meeting in Cernobbio
Nuclear as an asset for European energy security. Over 83% of participants are in favor of building new nuclear power plants in Europe
Cernobbio in favor of nuclear. In the context of the fiftieth edition of the TEHA Forum in Cernobbio, a survey was conducted to gather the opinion of the business community audience on the topic of energy security. The outcome is overwhelming confidence in nuclear: more than 83% of those interviewed are in favor of the possibility of building new nuclear power plants in Europe. A theme, that of nuclear power, relaunched and developed at La Piazza, the kermesse of affaritaliani.it, together with the Minister of Made in Italy Adolfo Urso, and the president of Confindustria Emanuele Orsini.
“The most serious problem for companies is the cost of energy. We need nuclear power plants capable of meeting the demands, third-generation. These small reactors can be placed in every factory. We do not want to go from submission to fossil coal to subordination to foreign producers on critical raw materials. We are well on this path, so much so that in microelectronics alone we have been able to count over 12 billion in investments. We are pushing the country to become a large producer of green technology. Catania will become the largest producer of photovoltaics in Europe, we want to produce in Italy the large turbines and blades that will be those of the future,” Urso told La Piazza.
“All the companies that come to the ministry tell us that the problem is the cost of energy and the way to supply energy in a sustainable way on an industrial level is to create, together with renewable energy, nuclear production with the new third-generation technology, which will be able to create nuclear power plants that can then be installed where they are required.” “Our country has companies capable of doing this, Italy must be a place where these power plants can be produced, to then be installed where they are required.”
Orsini told La Piazza that “we are still leaders as an export country, it means that our exports have a positive balance of 100 billion”, he recalls. On the topic of nuclear energy, discussed by Urso during the first evening of “La Piazza”, “I would reason on competitiveness”, explains Orsini who adds “we must increase the energy autonomy of the country, we are in favor of renewable sources and the mix is the way and the objectives that we have set ourselves for 2030 are very ambitious”. “Thinking of increasing it further until 2050, on this we must be very careful. We must talk about nuclear knowing that we will be ready in 11 or 12 years”, says the president of Confindustria. With the Italian government, “the dialogue is continuous, we also talked about nuclear because it is part of the industrial policy of the country Italy”.
The president of Confindustria is open to energy mixes, “but we must understand that in the mix it is obvious that the objectives are very ambitious on renewables. We need to have constant sources. For this reason we must, without ifs and buts, start talking about nuclear again. Aware of the fact that if we start talking about it today, we will be ready in 11-12 years. At least let’s start experimenting in Italy”.
With Urso, in the meeting at the beginning of August, “we also talked about nuclear, because the nuclear part is certainly a piece of the country’s long-term industrial policy”. “In Europe there are some unknowns that worry us, such as the stop to internal combustion engines by 2035; we need to put technological neutrality at the center; we are leaders in biofuel, on the Green Deal there needs to be a discussion with the next European Commission”. On the topic of energy, Orsini added: “The energy mix is good but there is room to increase it without excluding new generation nuclear power”.
