Cernobbio Forum, it’s the day of the opposition: the words of Schlein, Conte and Calenda

“In the next budget law we would propose that at least the part relating to Irpef tax rates worth 4 billion should be invested in healthcarebecause we believe that healthcare is one of the fundamental problems of this country”. This was stated by the leader of Azione Carlo Calenda, speaking at the Ambrosetti Forum in Cernobbio. “The idea that the opposition to each budget law must propose things that are worth 50 billion more in deficit is wrong” and “not because Meloni didn’t do it when, she did it perhaps more than the others”, said Calenda.

Asked by reporters about the words spoken yesterday by the Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, Calenda observed: “Her speech is what every Prime Minister does in this place. That is, to tell the magnificent progressive fortunes of the government. I agree with some of the things that Meloni has done, some data are positive, because they are actually positive”. Then he added: “I find it quite ridiculous what has always been done in Italy, Meloni herself did it, when you are in opposition you say that everything is going badly and when you are in government you say that everything is going well. I believe that the problem is bigger than that”. “Beyond the individual choices and individual scandals, This government has a huge problem of political leadership. It is unable to administer the country”, Calenda concluded.

For Calenda “we are in a time of very muscular bipolarism in which stones are thrown at each other, the result is that we will be submerged by these stones”. “Any government platform, whether it is right-wing, left-wing or born from the collaboration between the center and the left or the center and the right, for us can only be based on what is realistic and feasible. And unfortunately this does not happen”, observed Calenda.

“We are in opposition and our mutual duty is to collaborate with other oppositions whenever possible, to try to propose solutions, such as on the minimum wage. Sometimes we succeed, sometimes we don’t, but Azione will not be in a coalition in which it is not clear how you intend to address the energy transition. For us, the green deal must be overcome and nuclear power is needed”, warned the leader of Azione.

Conte: “We need a new Next Generation Eu”

“There is a need for a new Next Generation Eu, we claim this historic turning point but the plan must be stabilized”, said the leader of the 5 Star Movement Giuseppe Conte in his speech. “Only with tools of this type will the European Union be able to compete in the global space with giants such as the United States and China: the European Union budget must be increased”, he said.

Conte stressed that “it is important to reduce the country’s debt, but the only real certified possibility, even historically, is to push growth: expansionary policies are needed”. “A tax on extra profits? It would be good and fair”, said Conte, according to whom “the economic policy that this government actually seems to be pursuing is an economic policy that focuses on the primary surplus”. “This economic policy – said Conte – means new taxes, further cuts and focusing on poor work: of course, the government is focusing a lot on exports but the risk is that of sinking domestic demand”.

Schlein: “Available to work together on maneuver with pragmatic approach”

“Companies need to plan. It is clear that we need to make an effort and in this, if we want to work together in the next maneuver, we have always been there with a pragmatic approach. As we said that we would help the implementation of the PNRR”. This was said by the secretary of the Democratic Party Elly Schlein speaking at the Ambrosetti Forum in Cernobbio.

“The first issue I would like to address together with the other oppositions – said Schlein, who spoke on a panel with Carlo Calenda and Giuseppe Conte – is a plan to return to growth”. We need “industrial policies that are able to accompany the great changes we are undergoing”. The other need for the Democratic Party is “to give continuity to incentives. Transition 5.0 came late and without continuity, because there is nothing left after 2026”.
