Protest against water consumption: climate activists from the group Extinction Rebellion have filled golf holes on several courses with cement and vegetable seedlings.
Barcelona – Cement and vegetables in golf holes: This is a new protest action by climate activists in Spain. The activists of the climate protection group “Extinction Rebellion” filled the holes on a total of ten golf courses in nightly actions.
According to their own statements, the protests are directed against “water wastage during one of the worst droughts Europe has ever experienced”. Golf has no place in a world without water, group members said.
Climate activists in Spain: Extinction Rebellion starts protest action on golf course
Extinction Rebellion criticizes the daily watering of 437 golf courses in Spain. A golf course hole alone uses more than 100,000 liters of water per day to maintain the surrounding green, the group of climate activists said, citing figures from the environmental organization Ecologists In Action.
This means that golf courses use more water than the populations of Madrid and Barcelona combined. Golf, on the other hand, was played by just under 0.6 percent of the population. So the activists have plugged the holes on golf courses in Barcelona, Madrid, Valencia, the Basque Country, the Navarre region and the island of Ibiza. Some of the activists filled the holes with cement, others planted seedlings.
Protest action against water consumption: Spain hit by extreme drought
According to experts, parts of Spain are drier than they have been in a thousand years. After the hottest and driest spring since weather records began, 60 percent of the country was on alert in early June, according to the European Drought Observatory, because there was a lack of rain and the first heat wave of the summer caused record temperatures of more than 44 degrees Celsius. In April, activists from Extinction Rebellion in Berlin called for a spring rebellion. Among other things, they called on the government to declare a state of emergency for species extinction. During another protest action in April, climate activists from the action group “Extinction Rebellion” broke into the Hotel Adlon in Berlin and ignited pyrotechnics.
