The Cord Blood Center “CellSave” in Dubai announced that it has stored more than 100,000 umbilical cord units for citizens and residents of the country, to be used in the treatment of chronic and dangerous diseases.
Sarah Al Haj Ali, CEO of CellSave Cord Blood Center, said that the center is the first private cord blood facility to obtain a license from the Dubai Health Authority, and includes the largest stem cell laboratory in the Gulf region and the Middle East. She stated that the center recorded a high turnout of Emirati families to store cord blood units for 30 years, to benefit from them in the future in treating diseases.
She explained that cord blood stem cells are used to treat more than 80 conditions, including blood disorders, cancers and metabolic disorders, to rebuild the blood and immune system. She added: “There are more than 100 studies underway around the world looking at the value of umbilical cord blood stem cells in regenerative medicine, in important medical fields such as cardiovascular, neurological, immunological and tissue or organ damage.”
For her part, Alia Abdel Razek, Operations Manager at the Umbilical Cord Bank, said: Stem cells can be collected from the umbilical cord, tissues and placenta after birth and stored in a refrigerated laboratory for more than 30 years. She explained that a large number of stem cells were extracted from Arab and Gulf families for a wide range of treatment processes, including cases of thalassemia, sickle cell anemia, cancers and regenerative clinical trials, such as cerebral palsy and autism.
She added: Cord blood and stem cell services in Dubai are distinguished by their commitment to quality and excellence, noting that benefiting from cord blood is a rapidly growing field in the Arab region, to benefit from it in the treatment of diseases.
