“This is a clear message to criminals that the festivities will not be opportunities for robberies and theft in the state of São Paulo”said Derrite.
Police reinforcement on festival days
The Civil and Military Police carried out a task force to combat crimes during the days of revelry. Around 20,000 police officers worked to ensure security in all 645 municipalities in São Paulo.
This year, the Civil Police acted, in an unprecedented way, with agents who worked directly in the blocks. Throughout Operation Carnival, in the capital, 54 suspects were arrested. The police also recovered 183 cell phones and seized 598 bank cards.
The strategy was also adopted by the Military Police. Police officers in civilian clothes circulated among the public to observe suspicious behavior and prevent crimes. The work was coordinated by the PM Operations Center, which set up a Command and Control Office, with the integration of several bodies from the State and the City of São Paulo.
During the Carnival period, the PM, through Copom, received 299 calls related to theft and theft of cell phones in the capital. The drop was 68% compared to Carnival in 2023, when Copom was called 955 times by revelers.
According to the PM, 622 people were arrested in São Paulo during Carnival this year – 148 detainees were wanted by the courts. The corporation also seized 47 weapons and removed just over 600 kilos of drugs from the streets.
