In a video, CDU politician Ploß calls for a stop to illegal migration to Germany. The Jungfernstieg in Hamburg is an example of the consequences – now he is being accused of racism.
Hamburg – The migration debate is loud. Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser (SPD) has increased border controls. The chairman of the Conference of Interior Ministers, Michael Stübgen, is calling for the right of asylum in its current form to be abolished outright. The migration meeting between the traffic light coalition and the Union ended without agreement. The topic is on everyone’s lips. One politician has now apparently bitten off more than he can chew.
“The consequences of illegal migration”: Ploß makes video on Jungfernstieg
Hamburg CDU politician Christoph Ploß has spoken out with a post on the social media platform X and is now receiving criticism. In a video from Thursday (September 18), Ploß, wearing a light blue shirt, speaks about German migration policy on Hamburg’s Jungfernstieg. He calls for more border controls and rejections.
“I’m standing here on Hamburg’s Jungfernstieg, and here you can feel the consequences of illegal migration particularly strongly at any time of day, especially in the evening,” says the 39-year-old politician. Behind him are largely empty streets. Jungfernstieg has changed for the worse. “One thing should finally be clear to everyone: illegal migration to Germany must be stopped.”
Criticism of video: CDU man Ploß spreads “racist ideas”
With his video, Ploß criminalizes “all people of non-German origin,” writes the Cologne City Advertiser. And the internet is also criticizing the CDU man. “That’s right, there are strange characters in light blue shirts hanging around and spreading racist ideas. Terrible!”, someone commented on the video. “You can’t tell by looking at people whether they are here legally or illegally, you can’t even tell whether they are German,” replied an X user.
Many comments are also directed against the party itself. “#NeverCduCsu”, “Christian party?…never!”, or “The #CDU is responsible for our country becoming a shithole” are comments under Ploß’s video. CDU party colleague and former general secretary, Ruprecht Polenz, condemns Ploß in a comment and defends the party. “This blanket suspicion of all ‘different-looking’ people as ‘illegal migrants’ should be an absolute no-go for Christian Democrats.”
Jungfernstieg with negative headlines last year
In Ploß’s statement, no one can be seen in the background, so it is not clear what he means by saying that “the consequences of illegal migration are particularly evident” on Jungfernstieg. ndrIn a 2023 article, the promenade was examined in more detail. “People from different cultures meet on Jungfernstieg. This offers both opportunities and challenges,” the article emphasized. There is no mention of illegal migration.
The Jungfernstieg made negative headlines last year because of repeated violent clashes, but Hamburg Evening Paper However, at the end of August 2024, he wrote that the number of violent crimes and bans on residence is falling. The Hamburg police chief, Falk Schnabel, also told the ndrthat Jungfernstieg is not a “place of fear”.
Merz as candidate for chancellor: “He has my full support”
With his comments, Ploß reminds us of his party leader Friedrich Merz. He had in the migration debate between the traffic light coalition and the Union, refugees must be turned away at the German bordersThe asylum summit ended without agreement. Merz can now look forward to being a candidate for chancellor.
On Tuesday (September 17), the CDU and CSU agreed on Merz as the Union’s candidate for chancellor. CSU leader Markus Söder expressly pledged his support to Merz. Ploß also supports Merz. In a post on X, he writes that he is pleased about Merz’s candidacy for chancellor for the CDU and CSU. “I am firmly convinced: As chancellor, he will pull Germany out of the traffic light slump and move our country forward again! Friedrich #Merz has my full support.” (lw)
