Armin Laschet considers it “complete nonsense” to speak of the “greatest crisis of the CDU since 1945”. Jens Spahn (CDU) has a different opinion.
Bielefeld – At the state party conference of the CDU in North Rhine-Westphalia, Armin Laschet gave an impressive warning not to bring about crisis scenarios after the Union’s defeat in the federal election *. To speak of the “greatest crisis of the CDU since 1945” is, in his opinion, “complete nonsense”. In addition, this inspires “no voter at all to re-elect the CDU”.
On the other hand, the CDU party donation affair in 2000 was a real crisis. He therefore urged a more proportionate assessment of the current situation of the CDU: “Leave cups in the cupboard, approach things realistically”. With these statements, he was referring in all probability to an interview that the Federal Minister of Health and CDU Federal Vice-President Jens Spahn had given the Deutschlandfunk.
Spahn: “greatest crisis in our history” – Laschet thinks this is “complete nonsense”
In this, Spahn described the current situation of the CDU as the “greatest crisis in our history”. This has shown the “historically worst” election result for the Union. After the federal election, in which the Union received fewer votes than ever before, both outsiders and party members perceived the party’s situation as a crisis.
In addition to looking for the reasons for the disastrous election result, the CDU is now focusing on renewal. The Junge Union should help in particular. Despite assessing the situation as the “greatest crisis”, Spahn is also willing to work on reshaping the Union. In an interview with Deutschlandfunk, the Federal Health Minister said in this context: “I would like to shape the new CDU”.
Spahn present at Laschet’s speech: tensions are evident
Jens Spahn was personally present at Laschet’s speech. He was invited as a delegate to the state party convention of the CDU in North Rhine-Westphalia and thus got Laschet’s tip straight away. At the state party conference of the CDU on Saturday (October 23), Hendrik Wüst was elected as the new chairman of the CDU in North Rhine-Westphalia and thus as the successor to Armin Laschet.
