After the fifth baby of the family of giraffes that are in the San Juan de Aragón Zoo, the Ministry of the Environment (Sedema) from Mexico City, summoned the citizens of the capital to choose the name of the little giraffe.
From this Friday until next Sunday, October 22, those interested will be able to vote for their favorite name, from a list of 10 options, by entering to the following link or entering the Sedema page.
The options for naming the baby giraffe are:
- Nasha (born during the rain)
- Akili (intelligent or brilliant)
- Lewa (beautiful)
- Ayana (translates to beautiful flower)
- Cumbi (means party before the arrival of a new female member to the home)
- Joy (joy)
- Dakari (happiness)
- Itzae (gift)
- Itzia (princess)
- Léets (blaze of fire)
Who is the baby giraffe?
The giraffe is the daughter of the male “Baobab”, 10 years old, and “Acacia”, 12 years old, who from the first day of her baby was born have cared for and protected her, as well as veterinarians and caregivers of the Aragon Zoo.
“Acacia” gave birth after a gestation period of almost 15 months, and from the first days, the baby connected very well with the rest of the herd, which also make up eight Eland antelopes.
It should be remembered that the giraffe is the tallest land mammal in the world and is currently in danger of extinction, according to the Red List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)Therefore, the work carried out by the zoos of Mexico City provides the opportunity to preserve and learn about this species.
