CBS: significantly more asylum applications in the second quarter of 2021 due to corona relaxation
In the second quarter of 2021, 3,355 asylum applications were submitted in the Netherlands. That is a quarter more than in the first quarter. The number of ‘followers’ – namely persons who come to the Netherlands to join their family – also increased by almost a thousand applications to 2,580. That turns out from figures from Statistics Netherlands (CBS) based on information from the Immigration and Naturalization Service (IND). The statistical office explains the increase due to the relaxation of the corona measures in the period in question.
The outbreak of the corona crisis in March 2020 led to a decline in the number of asylum applications in the second quarter of that year. Since then, the number of asylum applications has increased again, but is still below the level of 2019. In the second quarter of 2021, the number of first applications was 35 percent lower than in the second quarter of 2019. In particular, the number of applications increased again last June. This is due to the (partial) lifting of international travel restrictions related to corona, according to CBS.
As in previous years, Syrians formed the largest group with 1,015 first applications in the second quarter of 2021, followed by Turks and Afghans. The strongest increase compared to the first quarter of 2021 was among asylum seekers with Turkish nationality. The number of Turkish applications quadrupled after a dip in the previous quarter. The number of asylum applications from people of Eritrean nationality increased by more than 50 percent.
