CBS: average excess mortality of 300 per week in October
In the past four weeks, between October 4 and 31, more than 1,250 more people have died than expected based on death rates in the years before the corona pandemic. Which reports the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) Friday based on preliminary figures. Particularly among the over-80s and among people who receive care under the Long-term Care Act (Wlz), for example residents of nursing and care homes and care institutions for the disabled, there was so-called excess mortality.
On average, 300 more people died per week in October than expected, in September an average of 200 more people died per week compared to the years before the corona pandemic. Statistics Netherlands bases its figures on (excess) mortality on various sources, including death notices. It is not clear from this what the cause of death is, CBS will receive this information later via a cause of death statement. Excess mortality is a temporary increase in the number of deaths that coincides with a special event, such as a flu epidemic, a heat wave or the corona pandemic.
According to data that came in to RIVM 229 people died from Covid-19 between October 4 and October 31. RIVM receives daily reports of deceased Covid-19 patients from the GGDs. Because there is no obligation to report deaths from Covid-19 and registration often takes some time, the actual number of people who died from the coronavirus is higher.
