The confederation is still evaluating the impacts of banning betting houses without authorization to operate in Brazil, but has already instructed clubs to remove brands
The CBF (Brazilian Football Confederation) is still studying the impacts of banning bets without authorization to operate from Friday (October 11, 2024). Despite this, it seeks to fully comply with the Ministry of Finance’s guidelines and court decisions on the matter, according to sources heard by the Power360.
The highest entity of Brazilian football had already sent a statement to the clubs on Friday (Oct 4, 2024) stating that it would “unrestrictedly” comply with the Ministry of Finance’s guidelines. The following day, a decision by the TRF1 (Federal Regional Court of the 1st Region) in the Federal District overturned the national authorization of bets registered only in Rio de Janeiro.
How the Power360 already showed in July, the Loterj (Rio de Janeiro State Lottery) told companies in the sector and pleaded in court that accreditation in the State would give bets the right to explore the market at a national level.
The municipality obtained an injunction on October 1st that allowed national exploration. The Ministry of Finance, however, disagreed with the understanding and said that the AGU (Attorney General of the Union) would overturn the injunction in court – which was confirmed.
This change also entered the CBF’s radar, as bets registered only at state level will be prevented from displaying their brand in games outside the federation unit in question.
5 clubs will lose sponsorship
In Series A of the Brazilian Championship, 5 clubs will be impacted by the ban. They are all sponsored by Lucky Sportswhich obtained a license from Loterj (Rio de Janeiro Lottery) to operate in the State, but was impacted by AGU’s action in court.
Bet sponsors Athlético-PR (which suspended the contract on October 3rd given the uncertainty about the continuity of bet in Brazil); Bahia, Corinthians, Grêmio and the Palmeiras women’s team.
