“President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev raised the flag of Azerbaijan on the flagpole in Khakendi and gave a speech,” Aliyev’s presidential office informed the news agency AFP.
Azerbaijan started a short-lived war in Nagorno-Karabakh in September.
The region belongs to Azerbaijan, but its population has traditionally been ethnically Armenian. After the war started, almost all of the region’s 120,000 inhabitants fled to Armenia, and the region’s separatist administration lost control of it.
Before September, Azerbaijan and Armenia had fought two wars over the region after the collapse of the Soviet Union: in the 1990s and in 2020.
Next the countries may drift into conflict over the Nakhichevan region. Nakhichevan is a region outside Azerbaijan on the border of Armenia, Iran and Turkey.
The US magazine Politico reported on Friday, citing its sources, that the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has warned that Azerbaijan may attack Armenia over territory “in the coming weeks”.
In the past, President Aliyev has said that Armenia should open a land bridge on its southern border that would connect Azerbaijan to Nakhchivan. Aliyev has threatened to solve the matter “by force”.
